Gaston County Athlete of the Week October 27th, 2009: Tyler Humphries

The Physical Performance Center at Gaston Rehab Associates, The Gaston Gazette, Trophy House Treasures, and the Fitness and Nutrition Council of Gaston County would like to congratulate Tyler Humphries, North Gaston Football, for being recognized as the Gaston County Athlete of the Week for October 27th, 2009.

Tyler is a senior on the North Gaston Football team and plays Wide Receiver, Defensive Back, and Kick off Returner. Tyler is a two year starter and has 478 yards receiving and three all purpose touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball. Tyler also has four interceptions and 32 tackles as a defensive back.

According to Coach Josh Clendenin:

"Where he's [Tyler] been the most impressive is his attitude and leadership. He really wants to be successful. Our record doesn't show it, but we've gotten better and one of the big reasons is because of what he brings to the team. He's not extremely vocal as a leader, but he just goes out and does his thing."

Tyler has a 3.58 GPA and hopes to major in either physical therapy or athletic training. Right now Tyler is drawing football recruiting interest from Lenior-Rhyne, Mars Hill, Wingate, and Old Dominion.

Cory Barsness runs in Marine Corps Marathon October 2009

Cory Barsness, Director of the Physical Performance Center Gastonia, ran in and completed the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday October 25th in Washington. D. C.. Cory unofficially ran a 4:30 for the marathon.

Gaston County Athlete of the Week October 20th, 2009: Michael Rogers, Ashbrook HS

The Physical Performance Center at Gaston Rehab Associates, The Gaston Gazette, Trophy House Treasures, and the Fitness and Nutrition Council of Gaston County would like to congratulate Michael Rogers, Ashbrook HS Cross Country, for being named the Gaston County Athlete of the Week for October 20th, 2009.

Michael is a senior at Ashbrook and is a three time all conference and two time all county runner. This season alone, Michael won the Appalachian Clash, placed third at the Gaston County Championships, 16th at Western North Carolina Carnival and 26th at the Wendy's invitational. Michael has a 5K PR of 17:15.

According to coach Al Hess:

"He [Michael] is the hardest working, most dedicated runner I've had since Garrett Davis (in the late 1980's). He ran over 500 miles this summer to get ready for the season. He wants it so bad. He's gone above and beyond his talent because of his hard work."

Congratulations again, Michael and keep up the great work!

Mental Toughness Seminar for Athletes in Gastonia, NC November 3rd and 7th 2009

The Physical Performance Center at Gaston Rehab Associates, Inc. will be hosting a FREE "Mental Toughness" seminar for athletes, parents, and coaches on Tuesday November 3rd, 2009 at 7 pm and then again on Saturday, November 7th at 11 am.

This presentation is designed to provide athletes with strategies to cope with the mental stresses of sport. We will also cover other issues related to exercise and sport psychology designed to better motivate athletes.

Gaston County Athlete of the Week October 13th, 2009: Taylor Baird, South Point HS

The Physical Performance Center at Gaston Rehab Associates, The Gaston Gazette, Trophy House Treasures, and the Fitness and Nutrition Council of Gaston County, would like to congratulate Taylor Baird, Varsity Tennis at South Point High School, for being named the Gaston County Athlete of the Week for October 13th, 2009.

Taylor is a Junior at South Point and finished the season with a 9-0 mark heading into this week's Big South 3A tournament. Taylor is currently ranked in state, regional, and national rankings by the U.S. Tennis
Association.

According to Coach Matthew Holloman, "She's ranked, but she doesn't think she is better and anyone else or brag about it. She's a good leader that's always encouraging her teammates, and she very coachable. Taylor is also a very hard worker in the classroom."

Iredell County Athlete of the Week October 4th, 2009: Bakary Torrence Mooresville HS

The Physical Performance Center at Gaston Rehab Associates, The Record and Landmark, and Trophy House Treasures would all like to congratulate Bakary Torrence, a football and track athlete at Mooresville Senior High School, for being named the Iredell County Athlete of the Week for October 4th, 2009.

Bakary has led his football team in tackles the past two years and is described as "very quiet, humble, and has a great attitude toward his teachers, coaches and peers." Bakary has aspirations of attending college to obtain an engineering degree and to also play football.

Gaston Community Healthcare Commission receives Vera S. Robinson Award

The Gaston Community Healthcare Commission received the Vera S. Robinson award at the 2009 Healthy Carolinian's conference held October 8th. The healthcare commission received one of 4 awards presented to those partnerships who have remained certified for 15 years.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the Healthcare Commission over the last 15 years.

Gaston County High School Football Friday Night

 A few athletes had notable performances in their high school football games on Friday night in Gaston County.

Hunter Huss's Jontavian Hall pulled down the game winning touchdown for the Huskies in their double overtime win over Kings Mountain.

Forestview's all star running back, Kevin Jeter, scored two touchdowns in the first two possessions for the Jaguars and finished the night with 122 yards rushing.

Darion Hancock from Forestview also scored a touchdown in the 27-0 win over North Gaston.

If you would like to see your name highlighted like these athletes there is only one thing you can do and that is work hard! The training these athletes did in the off-season is now paying off.

Iredell County Athlete of the Week October 11th, 2009: Molly Cotton, Lake Norman High School

The Physical Performance Center at Gaston Rehab Associates, The Record and Landmark, and Trophy House Treasures would like to congratulate Molly Cotton, Lake Norman High School Women's Volleyball, for being named the Iredell County Athlete of the Week for October 11th, 2009.

Molly is one of the athletes who has been training in our facility since last February. She has battled through adversity and always keeps a smile on her face. Molly is a team leader, a ferocious competitor on the court, and an overall great person. We could not be more proud to recognize Molly with this honor.

Gaston County Athlete of the Week October 6th, 2009: Jessica Smith

The Physical Performance Center at Gaston Rehab Associates, The Gaston Gazette, Trophy House Treasures and the Fitness and Nutrition Council of Gaston County would like to congratulate Jessica Smith, a Senior setter on the Forestview High School Women's Volleyball team, for being named the Gaston County Athlete of the Week for October 6th, 2009.

Jessica is averaging 5.3 assists, 4.3 digs and one ace per match this season and is a three year starter at setter. Jessica is also the only Senior on Forestview's young team.
